研究领域：
　　动物系统学、进化生物学、生物防治、传粉生物学。
研究兴趣：
　　1999年-2006年，朱朝东博士的研究工作主要在黄大卫研究员指导下，集中在中国姬小蜂亚科的系统学研究。
　　2006年带领一个独立团队至今，在基础理论与系统学研究方面，朱朝东博士一直坚持以膜翅目蜜蜂总科与寄生蜂为主要研究类群，面向功能昆虫群，开展系统学研究：分别从DNA、外部形态学与化石昆虫等方面，获取信息；运用包括DNA分类学与支序系统学在内的理论与方法，期望实现农林重要害虫及其寄生蜂的快速、准确鉴别与关键节点类群的系统发育关系重建。另外，围绕分子系统学与大规模数据挖掘，朱朝东博士组织了合作小组，开发了分子数据整合与分析软件3件；开展了对基因组序列数据分析工作。在面向国家需求与应用昆虫学方面，朱朝东博士主要研究潜叶蝇及其寄生蜂的分化、北方果园小蛾类害虫及其寄生蜂鉴别体系构建、南方油茶相关传粉蜜蜂的分类与生物学。2006年开始涉及野生蜜蜂分类与传粉生物学的研究。
　　2006年以来，通过和组员的共同努力，朱朝东博士已经建立了独立的DNA分类学与分子系统学实验室，设立果树小蛾类害虫及其寄生蜂长期定点研究站1个。朱朝东博士所在的组现有多名在读硕士研究生从事野外标本采集和室内DNA分类领域的研究。在DNA分类的工作，作为第6届国际膜翅目学家大会（2006年1月）报告之一，受到与会专家的广泛关注。
　　同时，朱朝东博士联合澳大利亚科学家，一起创立了中澳虚拟分类学概念与理念；并在动物研究所领导和同事的支持下，于2009年9月启动了中澳虚拟分类学实验室。2010年8月，该工作作为中国和澳大利亚两国科技合作30年的30个故事之一参加中澳科技展在上海展出。2010年11月，结合生物防治信息体系的建设，朱朝东博士参加了中国科学院和澳大利亚科学院在阿德莱德市举办的农业对接会议并做报告，获得中外专家的一致赞许。相关内容已经整合到2011年即将启动的各类项目中实施。
　　此外，朱朝东博士作为第5届国际膜翅目学家大会秘书长，参与组织了该会2002年7月在北京召开。在寄生蜂方面DNA分类的工作，作为第6届国际膜翅目学家大会报告之一，受到与会专家的广泛关注；2009年被组委会邀请，作为亚太昆虫学会分组研讨会联合召集人和主持人。2009年受邀作为中方分组主持人，参加了“中、英、荷三国青年科学家前沿论坛”，研讨气候变化对动物地理分布的影响。2011.2.1-13，参加国际科学标本馆第二次会议，并和相关专家讨论分类与分子系统学相关合作框架。
